If you enjoy bikingSterling, VA is the place to be. With a range of fantastic bike paths on offer, there are plenty of places to get out on that bike, whether you’re an absolute beginner or a seasoned two-wheel warrior.

  1. Lake Fairfax Park

This beautiful lakeside park is a favorite with visitors from miles around. Surrounded by luscious forests and boasting great amenities, it’s also a popular cycling spot thanks to its miles of trails.

There are all kinds of trails here, suiting all ages and abilities. There are wide, smooth trails, perfect for families and beginners, as well as more challenging paths featuring jumps and rocky surfaces. The park has even hosted competitive mountain bike events, like the Legend of Lake Fairfax. There’s a new bike shop on-site too, so you’ve got all your cycling needs in one place.

  1. Sugarland Run Stream Valley Biking Trail

With nearly 9 miles of out and back trails running across streams and through dense woodland, this is a fun and scenic cycling location. It’s paved throughout, and apart from a handful of road crossings with safe crossing points, there are very few obstacles or challenges for visitors.

The best time to visit is in spring and summer, when the paths are dotted with wildflowers and a variety of birds are often seen in the trees and by the water. Please note, during rainy periods, parts of the track may become impassable.

  1. Washington and Old Dominion Regional Park

This mammoth asphalt trail runs for more than 45 miles, from Shirlington to Purcellville, coming right through Sterling on its way.

If you follow the trail for its entire run, you’ll experience all the varied landscapes of the state. From woodlands and meadows to quaint suburbs and parks. This is a very safe trail, with a clear dividing line in the center of the wide path.

  1. Fairfax Cross County Trail

The Gerry Connolly Cross County Trail is a smooth-running path perfect for beginners. Another long ride, it runs over 40 miles, mostly following the path of creeks, with great views of the local woods and lakes.

While this is a fairly easy trail with limited elevation and obstacles, there are some road crossings involved. Plenty of parking is available at several different trail entrances.

  1. Algonkian Regional Park Trails

This quiet riverside park offers a range of great bike trails. You can get onto the Potomac Heritage Trail, running to Great Falls through serenely beautiful landscapes. If you’re looking for something a little easier, you can ride on the park loop or Hollow Tree trail, both of which offer smooth, pleasant rides for families or beginners.

With lots of parking nearby and a range of other activities available at the park, this is a great place for a family day out.
