Sterling has fun things to do this Summer including the Superhero Ice Cream Social on July 28th.

When the weather warms up, it’s time to get out and about in the community with your friends and loved ones. Fortunately, Northern Virginia has a host of fun things you can do close to home. If you’re ready to enjoy the new season, mark your calendar for these six awesome summer activities near Sterling, VA.

1. Full Moon Hike at Banshee Reeks Nature Preserve

This cool evening event, just a quick drive from Sterling, will teach you about the distinctive sounds of animals living in the local forest. You’ll meet the hiking group, led by a Virginia naturalist, at the nature preserve’s education building.

The Full Moon Hike takes place June 3 at 10 p.m., and it’s followed by a campfire and smores. You’ll need to register at least 48 hours in advance at the Banshee Reeks Nature Preserve website. The preserve is located at 21085 The Woods Road in Leesburg.

2. Movies on the Lawn at Douglass Community Center

Loudoun County holds this outdoor event throughout the summer, including three scheduled showings in June: Red Tail on June 2, Antwone Fisher on June 16, and Men of Honor on June 30.

Movies on the Lawn is a free, family-friendly event, and you can bring your own refreshments and lawn chairs. The start time is 8:30 p.m. at 705-H Market Street in Leesburg.

3. Superhero Ice Cream Social

You and your kids can stop by the Sterling Community Center on July 28 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. to meet some of the community’s local heroes, including doctors, nurses, police officers, and first responders.

Kids are encouraged to dress up like their favorite superheroes and enjoy an ice cream sundae. This free event takes place at 120 Enterprise Street.

4. Meet a Monarch Butterfly Showcase

Banshee Reeks Nature Preserve will host this free event on Saturday, July 22, from 10 a.m. to noon. You’ll learn about the life cycle of caterpillars as they create cocoons and turn into monarch butterflies.

Visitors can even see these beautiful creatures up close. To participate, just stop by the visitors’ center at the preserve.

5. Sunrise and Birding Kayak Paddle

You’ll be able to glimpse some of the many Northern Virginia bird species during this early morning event led by a certified paddling instructor.
