Harpers Ferry National Historical Park, WV
Containing one of the most popular historic sites in the state, the Harpers Ferry National Historical Park welcomes hundreds of thousands of visitors every year thanks to its vast recreational areas and the many outdoor activities that can be performed here. This national park boasts an area of more than 3,600 acres, crisscrossed by hiking trails and scenic drives that make it feel like a natural oasis in the middle of the busy D.C. region.
For anglers visiting from Sterling and other nearby cities, the Harpers Ferry National Historical Park features several designated fishing areas. According to the National Park Service, 43 different species of fish have been found in the different waters of the area, which include parts of the Shenandoah and Potomac Rivers, as well as smaller streams connected to them. Some of the most commonly found specimens include largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, channel catfish, and bluegill sunfish.

Little Seneca Lake, MD
Little Seneca Lake is located just 40 miles away from downtown Sterling, a distance that can be covered in a little under an hour by car driving along routes VA-267 and I-270 N. This reservoir has a surface area of more than 500 acres and was created by the construction of a nearby dam across Little Seneca Creek. Although originally conceived as an alternative source of water for Washington, D.C., it has also become a popular recreational spot.
Although this lake is not as large or spectacular as other larger bodies of water in the region, it offers both amateur and experienced anglers the opportunity to catch some excellent specimens without too much effort. Some of the most common species inhabiting its waters include channel catfish, sunfish, perch, crappie, largemouth bass, and tiger muskie. Once you are done fishing, head to the designated picnic areas and recreational facilities to relax and enjoy a beautiful sunset by the lake.

Lake Artemesia, MD
With a surface area of almost 40 acres, Lake Artemesia is located in the eastern suburbs of Washington D.C., a little over 40 miles away from downtown Sterling. Boasting several fishing areas and recreational facilities, the lake attracts visitors not only from the capital but also from Baltimore and other nearby urban areas. For anglers, some of the species that can be found here include trout, largemouth bass, and bluegill.
