Sterling, VA considered one of the best places to live in the entire state of Virginia, boasts lots of outdoor and indoor recreation, beautiful scenery, shopping, and restaurants. But when you’re on a budget and looking for free things to do in the area, you’re in luck. You’ll have no trouble finding fun activities for the whole family. The list below is just a sample of what our fine city has to offer
1. Claude Moore Park Visitor Center
This charming park has walking trails, beautiful trees, ponds, forests, and meadows where Rover can play. While you’re walking the trails, take advantage of the provided road maps that tell the history of the region, which include homes from George Washington’s era as well as historical buildings like Lanesville House, Frogshackle Cottage, and Old Sterling Schoolhouse. There’s also a farm museum with displays of the region’s agricultural history.
Bird enthusiasts will enjoy spotting bluejays, cardinals, and even red-bellied woodpeckers. Bring your binoculars! If fishing is your thing, there’s a spot for that as well. The park is open seven days a week from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., and it is located at 21544 Old Vestals Gap Rd.
2. Gwen Thompson Briar Patch Park
Bring the kids because they’ll love the playgrounds here. There’s also a sand pit, always popular among the kids. And bring your baseballs, mitts, and footballs to throw around in the wide, open grassy spaces. The park also has a tennis court, a basketball court, and a volleyball court. Don’t forget your picnic baskets and coolers so you can take advantage of the pavilions and tables.
The park is dog friendly as well. With so much to do, you can spend hours here, so play your day accordingly. The park is open every day from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. and can be found at 21660 N. Sterling Rd.
3. Algonkian Regional Park
This is another good place for walking trails where you can enjoy the beauty and nature of the area. We especially like to walk this easy trail in the spring. You’ll also find kayaking, boating, and fishing as the park sits right by the Potomac River. Take a break from your activities with a picnic at the pavilion or bring some goodies for grilling.
The park is located at 47001 Fairway Dr. and is open every day from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.
