Located within the Chesapeake Bay Watershed, Sterling, VA provides locals and visitors with plenty of great boating opportunities. Along with the mighty Potomac River, Northern Virginia has a number of hidden gems for boat enthusiasts to discover. Take advantage of your Ford F-150’s impressive hauling capability and take the boat out to any of these amazing destinations!
1. Potomac River Along Washington D.C.
One of the most enjoyable ways to take in the sights of the nation’s capital is by navigating the adjacent Potomac River in your own boat. Situated by Reagan National Airport, Gravelly Point Boat Ramp serves as a great launching point for larger boats.
From there, you’ll get unforgettable views of iconic landmarks, such as the Washington Monument, Arlington Memorial Bridge, Jefferson Memorial, and Lincoln Memorial. You’ll also want to make a stop at the District Wharf, which hosts various eateries, shops, and live entertainment.
2. Beaverdam Reservoir
Since it’s mostly visited by locals, this scenic reservoir is the perfect spot to find some peace and enjoy nature from a kayak or canoe. Beaverdam is always stocked with several species of fish, so fishermen of all skill levels will want to bring along their fishing gear, as well.
A well-maintained park surrounds the lake and features deep forests. These forests are filled with a wide variety of wildlife, including deer and different bird species.
3. Chesapeake Beach
Located less than an hour and a half east of Sterling, Chesapeake Beach is home to a number of marinas from where you can launch your boat and explore the expansive Chesapeake Bay. Once on the water, you’ll gain access to some of the best fishing off the Maryland coast.
The long list of local species includes flounder, bluefish, cobia, striped bass, amberjack, and much more! Besides excellent fishing, Chesapeake Bay is famous for hosting racing events that are open to the public, so feel free to bring your speedboat and test your skills against other racers!
4. Lake Anna
At around 13,000 acres, Lake Anna is one of the largest freshwater reservoirs in Virginia. It’s also become a popular destination for fishing, swimming, and water sports. Early morning fishing is aided by a well-lit boat ramp that opens at 5:00 AM and is accessed through an automatic gate.
If you’d like to stay overnight, there are several lodges and cabins located within Lake Anna State Park—a few of them coming with their own dock.
When you’re living in Sterling, you’re never too far from beautiful lakes, rivers, and other bodies of water where you can enjoy a relaxing boat cruise! In need of a new boat hauler? Stop by at Ted Britt Chevrolet today and test drive your next truck or SUV!
