5 Great Places for Birdwatching in Driving Distance of Sterling, VAAfter a week’s worth of work, everyone in the family is ready to jump in your spacious Chevrolet Tahoe to take the scenic route. The best way to do so is to look for spots to do a little birdwatching. Here are the five best places near Sterling, VA to watch beautiful birds fly around.

1. Claude Moore Park

Claude Moore Park should be your first pick if you’re looking for a quick drive and spending plenty of time at a park. You can hike around and watch the birds, stay near the pond and see the fish, or sit down for a picnic with nothing but nature around you.

What’s the best part about this park? You can bring your dog with you! Your best friend will be happy to be near the birds too.

2. Algonkian Regional Park

You’ll find plenty to do in the enormous Algonkian Regional Park. You can take your binoculars and be around birds, or bring your golf clubs and tee up at the 18-hole golf course. There’s also a waterpark for both young and old to have fun.

Some love this park so much they throw their birthday parties and weddings there, and you can do so too!

3. Huntley Meadows Park

You’ll soon see why Huntley Meadows is one of the best places to watch birds and be around wildlife. More than 200 bird species live there, so it won’t be long before you see your first bird!

Are you traveling with kids? There’s a Youth Birding Club in the park for the young ones in your family to learn about birds and nature.

4. Great Falls Park

Are you looking for an adventure? Great Falls Park may be the right place for you. You can hike around the park’s 15-mile trail while you check the names of the birds you see in your bird list (that comes free of charge when you visit this park!)

You may not get to cross every bird’s name in your list the first time you visit, though. Birdwatchers have seen more than 160 species flying around the park.

5. Dyke Marsh Wildlife Preserve

This wildlife preserve in Alexandria is one of the many wetlands you’ll find in Virginia. There are 225 different types of birds living in this wetland. You may also get to see other animals roaming around too.

Do you want to go there but have nobody to go with? Don’t worry! There are expert-led bird walks every Sunday at 8 a.m.
