Located about 30 miles northwest of Washington, D.C., the city of Sterling, VA, is an excellent gateway for anyone wanting to get away from the frenzy of the capital and take a break from the routine. If you are looking for the best hiking trails in the region to spend some time in nature, here are three nearby spots you can visit in your 2022 Chevrolet Silverado.

1. Appalachian National Scenic Trail at Shenandoah National Park

With a total length of almost 2,200 miles connecting Springer Mountain in the state of Georgia with Mount Katahdin in Maine, the Appalachian National Scenic Trail is one of the top-rated routes among hikers from all over the country. The nearest trailhead for Sterling residents is the one located in the northeastern corner of Shenandoah National Park, which can be reached in about one hour and 15 minutes by car via route I-66.

Completed in the late 1930s, the Appalachian National Scenic Trail goes through some of the most beautiful landscapes in the country. The section that crosses Shenandoah National Park passes within one mile from Mount Rogers, featuring photogenic lush forests, scenic viewpoints, small waterfalls, and streams. Although this trail is open throughout the year, thru-hikers usually walk it between early spring and autumn.

2. Rappahannock River Heritage Trail

If you are looking for an easy hiking route that can be completed in less than two hours, the Rappahannock River Heritage Trail is the perfect destination. Located in the center of Fredericksburg and about 65 miles south of downtown Sterling, this trail can be reached in a little over an hour by car via route I-95.

With a total length of a little under two miles, this paved trail runs along the banks of the Rappahannock River and through Old Mill Park, offering great views of the area and welcoming hikers of all ages year-round. One of the reasons that make this trail particularly popular among families and those interested in the history of the area is the many historic sites and placards that can be found along the route.

3. Seneca Ridge Trail

Located just 35 miles northeast of downtown Sterling, Seneca Ridge Trail can be reached in as little as 45 minutes by car and is a fantastic spot for both hikers and mountain bikers. A moderately challenging route that can be completed in less than one hour and a half, this trail goes through lush forests, undeveloped areas, and several creek crossings, making it a great day trip destination.
