1. Chevy Colorado

Any trim level of the mid-size Chevy Colorado will perform well off the road, but for the best results, you’ll want to opt for the ZR2. The Colorado ZR2 is powered by a TurboMax engine, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, which delivers 310 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque. This version of the Colorado also comes with standard four-wheel drive.

Five different drive modes on the Colorado help optimize the performance of your truck, and one of those modes is devoted to off-road handling. The Colorado also has a driver-selectable full-locking front and rear differential, which increases traction in off-road conditions. There’s also an available underbody camera that offers a real-time view of conditions and terrain beneath the truck.

2. Chevy Silverado 1500

The full-sized Chevy Silverado 1500 is another good off-road-capable option, particularly if you choose one of the two

Trail Boss trims, each of which comes with a standard TurboMax engine and a standard eight-speed transmission. Additional engine options are available. Hill Descent Control, which uses antilock braking for a smoother, more controlled descent, comes standard on these trims. So does four-wheel drive and automatic locking rear differential.

Standard skid plates on the Trail Boss trims help protect the underbody of the Silverado when driving on rough, uneven terrain. Trail Boss trims also come with a standard trailering package that includes a trailer hitch, a trailering hitch platform, a seven-wire electric harness, and a seven-pin sealed connector for connecting trailer lights and brakes.

This truck comes with a standard 6-6-liter V8 gas engine, a 10-speed automatic transmission, and standard four-wheel drive. It also has mud-terrain tires on 18-inch wheels, a 1.5-inch suspension lift, and an electronically locking rear differential. Hill Descent Control and an integrated trailer brake controller come standard. An underbody skid plate is available.

When properly equipped, this truck can tow 30,000 pounds, and a host of advanced towing technologies are available.
