If you’re looking for beautiful picnic spots near Sterling, VA, there are an impressive number of wonderful outdoor spaces. With easy access to the Potomac and bountiful parks and green spaces nearby, choosing just one can be challenging. Here are a few of our favorites.

Lake Fairfax Park

Lake Fairfax Park offers a host of pavilions and recreational areas. Once you go through the entrance at 1400 Lake Fairfax Drive, there are a number of beautiful places to picnic along the main road that follows the shore of the lake. There are also several pavilions that can be reserved if you want to host a picnic for a larger group.

If you have children, there are playgrounds, a skate park, a carousel, and fields for softball and soccer games. Lake Fairfax Park is maintained by the Fairfax County Park Authority, so there are clean restrooms and the facilities are well-maintained. Your Chevrolet Trailblazer will carry your family and friends and everything you need for the best picnic of the summer.

Algonkian Regional Park

Along the shore of the Potomac River, you’ll find Algonkian Regional Park at 47001 Fairway Drive. Surrounded by the gentle woods and the sounds of the river, you can relax and enjoy your lunch on a bench or table, or in a shelter if the weather turns wet. Or, you can find a quiet area and spread a blanket on the forest floor.

If you want to extend your picnic into a longer outing, there is a water park, hiking trails, vacation cottages, and a golf course. Algonkian Regional Park is 838 acres of outdoor fun for everyone, as it’s dog-friendly and wheelchair accessible.

Claude Moore Park

Claude Moore Park is a more traditional city green space, nestled in between neighborhoods and shops at 21544 Old Vestal’s Gap Road. This beautiful park features two picnic pavilions, which can be reserved for larger groups, and offers an expansive lawn for relaxing or recreation.

While Claude Moore Park is dog-friendly, they must stay on a leash. There are clean restrooms and a water fountain maintained by Loudon County’s Parks, Recreation, and Community Services, and the nearby Lanesville Historic District offers educational walks and restored historic buildings to explore.

North Hills Picnic Pavilion

A lovely park stationed along the Pink Trail at 1400 N Village Road, the North Hills Picnic Pavilion offers a beautiful covered picnic area along with lots of space to play on the grass or the playground. It is wheelchair accessible with parking nearby and is dog-friendly.

The Pavilion can be rented for outings with larger groups, or used on a first-come, first-served basis by the general public.
